They say the key to having it all is knowing that you already do. I’ve come to realize that’s true. I’ll give you a recent example.

This past weekend my husband and I had big plans for a date night. 30 days worth of planning plus finding a sitter. This is the stuff that parents live for and that’s not because we don’t love our children but because rare moments of uninterrupted conversation is a precious commodity. So here we were…Saturday Eve and already discussing what we were going to order. And slowly, the chips began to fall…

Chicago weather had a different plan in mind. Why wouldn't it in April? Four to eight inches of snow was predicted and our double date partners cancelled. We decided to make a game day decision but it was looking grim. The next morning? Heavy snowfall with giant, gargantuan snowflakes. Double rats. We had to cancel for the safety of our commute and our sitter’s commute. Ho hum.

So what did we do? We had a family day. I know what you’re thinking. Isn’t that what you do every Saturday? The answer is: almost always yes. This felt slightly different though. Instead of being angry at the situation and having to cook more meals; we took advantage of one more winter Saturday. Soccer games were cancelled which gave us the opportunity to hunker down in our pjs and watch movies, eat snacks and veg out. And you know what? It was so incredibly relaxing and chock full of QT with the girls.

Bottom Line: fancy date nights are truly a dime a dozen with careful planning. It was because of our random, Spring snowstorm that we could truly enter a new week fresh and level-headed. Not a horrible trade off.

Besides, dinners can be rescheduled. Now off to find another sitter for Saturday night. Oy!
