Evergreen interviewing tips that actually work!

I’ve been in the interviewing hot seat for many many years. Conversely, I, too have interviewed for several jobs before launching my own company. While times have changed, I wanted to share a few tips that will actually help you land the job of your dreams. It’s possible! Call me old-fashioned but these timeless tips take very little time and make ALL the difference.

I interview candidates on the monthly and while I am still fine tuning my radar, I find that a few small gestures really separate candidates apart from each other. Sometimes it’s a vibe but most times, at least with me, I often feel the strongest based on the candidate’s actions.

So…give it a shot. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain!

  1. Send a resume with your cover letter. I know this sounds basic but you’d be surprised to know that I get a fair share of emails without any background information. I want to learn about you.

  2. It doesn’t hurt to follow up. C-level individuals often get weighted down by their inbox. If you want the job, don’t be afraid to ask for it…especially if we are slow to respond. It shows determination and spirit. Strong follow up always impresses me.

  3. Do your homework. It’s really important to ask questions on any interview; you have to get something out of it, too! Even more so, do your research with the company you are interviewing. Have a basic understanding of their services or products. Bonus points if you follow them on social media. Showcasing your knowledge on their services or a particular product that interests you shows that you are vested in getting hired. A lot of the questions that are asked are a telltale sign as to whether or not a candidate has truly done their homework. You never want to waste your interviewer’s time…after all, they already know about their company!

  4. Prepare for your interview. Time is a precious commodity. Be sure to read through next steps and understand what is expected of you. If you are unclear of what number to call or where to show up…ask in advance. Remember, most people run between meetings, calls and emails which means that they cannot answer every request in a timely manner. Knowing where to be in advance ensures you will avoid any interviewing hiccups.

  5. Be on time. I know this sounds silly but punctuality is truly your first impression.

  6. Follow up with a thank you. I honestly feel, and I am sure there are some that disagree, that it’s so incredibly important to follow up your interview with a thank you email. Bonus points for handwritten notes. Even if you feel the job is not a fit for you, illustrating that you appreciate someone’s time is an amazing sign of maturity, social grace and polish. And if you do want the job, ask for it. Ask for next steps. Show us you want it! You’d be surprised how effective that little phrase can be in taking you to the next level.

That’s it. Super simple to follow without a tremendous amount of homework. The bottom line is that when I set aside time to interview candidates, it’s truly because something special about your experience resonates with me and I want to talk more with you. Creating a career you love takes time but it’s attainable and it all starts with that first email. Good luck!
